“‘Au i ke kai loa.”
Swims the distant seas
This ‘ōlelo no‘eau is often said of one who travels afar. There is no real Hawaiian cultural connection to Halloween, but it definitely is a custom that has travelled afar to get here! Halloween and its related activities – trick or treating, fall parties, etc. have been integrated into our island culture for many, many generations. Though we may bob-for-pineapples instead of regular apples, the good spirit of Halloween is alive and well in Hawai‘i.
